The Roulens studio

Why Roulens starts with the pockets

Roulens began in 2019 with a small bag for a phone and three cards. We wanted something you could put on in the morning and stop thinking about: no wallet to dig for, no keys at the bottom, no phone lost under a scarf. That first bag became the Pocket Phone Crossbody, and it still sells in 13 colors.

Everything since has grown out of the same question. Where does each thing go, and can you reach it without looking? A crossbody sits against your hip all day, so the answer changes with the shape. A flat camera bag wants its cards in the middle. A taller wallet bag wants them at the front, behind a zip you can open with one hand.

Before a new layout joins the Roulens range, we carry it for a week ourselves. To the market, onto a plane, into a concert with a clear-bag rule and out again. We count how many times we had to open the main compartment to find a card. If the answer is more than once a day, the pockets move.

Our bags are vegan leather, which means polyurethane over a fabric backing, not animal hide. We call it vegan leather and never plain leather, because the federal guides for leather goods ask for exactly that. PU is light and wipes clean with a damp cloth. Like any coated surface, it wears first where it rubs, at the corners and along the strap edge, and it will not age the way hide does.

The hardware is where a cheap bag gives up first, so we look at it hardest. Zips on our crossbody bags run smooth and pull from either end, clasps close with a magnet you can work one-handed, and straps clip on with metal buckles rather than sewn loops. On the Flap Guitar-Strap Crossbody the strap is riveted where it meets the bag, because that is the join that carries the weight.

Color is the other half of the choice, and we treat it as part of the design rather than an afterthought. Two-tone bags pair black or cream with a cognac trim, and the soft shades, from blush to sky blue, are there for the days a black bag feels too heavy. Count the shade names and you get 27, spread over 55 colorways in 8 lines.

Two of our lines carry an RFID pocket for cards. Three put a zippered pocket on the side that rests against you, where a hand in a crowd cannot reach it. Those two details come up more than any color in the messages we get, so they have their own pages here.

The Roulens range stays small on purpose: 8 lines, 55 colors. Each one is here because it does a job the others do not. The canvas tote carries a laptop and groceries. The quilted gym set keeps a wet towel away from dry clothes. The men's briefcase takes a 15.6-inch laptop to work.

Before you ask

Questions we get about Roulens bags

Is Roulens vegan leather real leather?

No. It is polyurethane over a fabric backing. There is no animal hide in any Roulens bag.

Which Roulens bags have an RFID pocket?

Two lines: the Tassel Wallet Crossbody and the RFID Camera Crossbody, each with six card slots behind a zip.

Will my phone fit?

The Triple-Zip Crossbody states room for phones up to 6.9 inches. For the other lines, compare your phone with the inside measurements on the What Fits page: the smallest front is 7.6″ wide.

Can I take the strap off?

On three lines, yes: the Pocket Phone Crossbody, the Tassel Wallet Crossbody and the laptop briefcase come with a detachable strap. The rest have an adjustable strap that stays on.

How do I clean vegan leather?

Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened with water, then let it dry at room temperature. Skip solvents and heat. Our care guide goes through the rest.
